ICT 2008 Event

BEinGRID had an exhibit at the ICT 2008 event which took place on November 25-27, 2008 in Lyon, France.

The biennial ICT event (formerly called the "IST Event") is the most important forum for discussing research and public policy in information and communication technologies at European level. The event brings together researchers and innovators, policy and business decision-makers working in the field of digital technologies.
The ICT Event is organised by the European Commission's Directorate General for the Information Society and Media and is hosted by the current Presidency of the European Union.

BEinGRID Exhibit Selected

The BEinGRID exhibit at ICT08 demonstrated three of our first phase pilot implementations.

Business Experiment "Computational Fluid Dynamics and Computer Aid Design"

Firstly we showcased the work of computer-aided engineering SME Icon, and NTUA (National Technical University of Athens), who have modified an open-source computational fluid dynamics software to run on a Grid. This results in a superior and more cost effective level of modeling. Icon will be on hand to demonstrate how they used this to optimize air-flows in actual commercial use cases at a level unachievable without this technology. This work potentially opens the door for SME companies in this sector to overcome resources constraints in order to carry out complex modeling at a similar level to the larger market players.

Business Experiment "Visualisation and Virtual Reality"

Secondly, we showed how Grid technologies combined with innovative business models can have a disruptive effect on industry practice. In the architectural sector, customers are demanding ever more detailed and speedy simulations. These require large and expensive computer infrastructures, which Grid technology could potentially reduce. However, most European architect firms employ less than 10 people and cannot justify the cost of a Grid infrastructure for the low throughput they would require of it. Consequently, they struggle to compete with the larger players who can offer this added service. Now Belgian research centre CETIC, in collaboration with commercial partners Art & Build and Mental Images, can provide Grid enabled rendering for architectural design on an on demand basis. The SaaS service can be accessed remotely and easily through a portal from any location. In addition, the architect can tailor the modeling to his or her budget. Our exhibit demonstrated these capabilities interactively.

Remote Real-time Rendering on-demand - Now Just a Mouse-click Away
Brussels - November 13, 2008 - A new technology with the potential to dramatically change the way that architects operate will be showcased at the ICT 2008 event on November 25-27. Architects Art & Build and digital rendering developers Mental Images teamed up with engineers and ICT experts from FPMs and CETIC to develop an on-demand service that allows architects to submit designs for rendering from a remote location at a fraction of the time that would be required on a local PC. Business Experiment 'Financial Portfolio Management'

Grid computing is of course no stranger to the financial sector. Most financial institutions use some kind of Grid for number crunching on a massive scale, calculating growth, balancing risk, modelling scenarios, and so on. However running Grids in-house requires local expertise, high maintenance and presents difficulties in managing capacity and demand, maintaining high return on investment (ROI) and ensuring scalability. Italian consulting company INNOVA, in league with Grid computing experts SPACI, financial application developers from UNICAL and banks MPS and Finnat, has developed and founded a Grid-based application service provider (ASP). The service employs ground-breaking technologies to offer the desired and customised application through a portal, hiding the complexity of the system and placing access to the vast computation resources in the hands of those who need to use them.

New IT Service for the Financial Sector to Showcase at ICT Event this Month
November 17, 2008 - A new service for the financial sector is due to be showcased at the ICT 2008 event on November 25-27. The service is based on reducing the complexity of Grid computing for the end users. More...

BEinGRID – Much More Than Your Everyday Research Project

Brussels, November 12, 2008 - BEinGRID, the largest ICT project financed by the European Commission, will be hosting a booth at the ICT 2008 event in Lyon on November 25-27. This release describes why this project is causing such a stir in research circles.
BEinGRID is much more than your typical research project. For starters it’s huge, massive in fact. It has close to 100 partners, a budget over €24 million for a duration of 42 months. But that’s just numbers. What really makes BEinGRID stand out is that it isn’t trying to develop a platform, interconnect two technologies, solve a specific problem or explore new paradigms. No, BEinGRID is different. What BEinGRID really seeks to do is to stimulate the use of the technology in question, to bridge the gap between research and industry, to cross the chasm of technology uptake.
