The aim of this pilot is the application of DAIS Grid technologies to the field of Sales Management Systems (SMS) and Customer Relationships Management (CRM) services, the former focussed to the food services sector, the latter focused on the tourism sector.

Fact Sheet

What is the experiment about?

The main objective of this business experiment is to use Data Access and Integration technologies in order to provide a standardized and uniform layer for the access to distributed databases to the selected SMS and CRM application.

Why this experiment?

Currently there are few Application Service Providers (ASP) in the field of the SMS. They are using the traditional web technologies to provide services to SMEs.
These kinds of services are quite specific, but some key issues are common to the Grid field. The main issue is the “federation” of remote data sources, mainly relational databases.
The same scenario, involving different actors, is coming for the CRM service providers. As for the SMS case, these services are quite specific and the main issue is the “federation” of remote data sources, mainly relational databases.

Industrial input/added-value of this experiment

Despite the fields of SMS and CRM services are quite different for their business implications inside Small and Medium Enterprises, the technological challenges are today similar. The transition of the existing lightweight implementations toward a more sophisticated coupling of the information systems, needs an effective enhancements of the database federation technologies. The sample applications considered by this pilot are representatives of the state of the art of the respective sectors: the SMS are typically deployed at the level of the single selling point, while the CRM is based on the traditional web technologies, without an effective coupling of the CRM information system managed by the service provider and the Business partners local databases.
The outcomes of this BE will allow SMEs to manage their activities more efficiently thanks to the new Grid-enabled software.

How is this experiment going to be handled?

The experiment duration will be 18 months. After a preliminary requirement and design stage, a first prototype with basic features will be released and tested internally. In a second stage the final prototype will be implemented and tested by the end-users.
